Highlights
The men's shot weighs 7.26 kilograms with a diameter between 110 and 130 millimeters. The women's shot weighs 4 kilograms and has a diameter of 95 to 110 millimeters.
The objective in shot put is for every athlete to throw a heavy spherical object, known as a shot, as far as possible using a pushing action.
The distance of the throw is measured from the circumference of the circle along a line to the nearest mark made by the fall of the shot.
Athletes have 60 seconds to commence throwing after their name is called. The shot must initially rest near the neck and remain there throughout the motion, being released above shoulder height with one hand. Athletes can use the perimeter inside the circle, but not the border or outside the toe board. The shot must be thrown within a 34.92-degree legal sector, and the athlete must leave the circle from the back after the throw.
A throw is a foul if the athlete does not pause before throwing, fails to commence within 60 seconds, holds the shot below shoulder level, leaves the circle before the shot lands, does not move from the rear half of the circle, or loses continuous contact with the shot. Touching the top of the toe board, the upper side of the iron ring, or any position outside the circle during the throw also results in a foul.
