Summary
Highlights
Ellen Wilson arrives at Malory Towers, an all-girls boarding school. She meets several girls, including the seemingly friendly but manipulative Gwen, and the hot-headed but courageous Darrell Rivers. Ellen is introduced to the school environment, including the strict Head Miss Gray and Mr. Parker.
The students are informed about the upcoming election for the new head of form. Gwen, Alicia, and Darrell are nominated. The candidates are expected to give speeches, and the form along with the teaching staff will vote.
During swimming, Gwen pushes Ellen into the pool, unaware that Ellen cannot swim. Darrell heroically rescues Ellen but also displays her impulsive temper when confronting Gwen. This incident highlights Darrell's struggles with her anger and its potential impact on her candidacy.
In class, Darrell struggles to write Mr. Parker's name correctly due to her 'word blindness' (dyslexia). Mr. Parker punishes her, and Ellen defends Darrell, leading to her own punishment. Feeling the pressure and wanting to show she can control her temper, Darrell withdraws her nomination for head of form, suggesting Sally Hope as a replacement.
The remaining candidates deliver their speeches. Gwendoline Mary Lacy focuses on happiness and promises no detentions. Alicia Johns delivers a formal, Churchill-inspired speech. Sally Hope, though initially reluctant, speaks about representing the girls' needs and ensuring fairness, changing her proposed title to 'form representative'.
Gwen tries to manipulate Ellen into switching beds, claiming a leak, but Sally and Alicia stand up for Ellen. Gwen, hoping to be seen as responsible, reports the 'leak' to Matron.
The votes are counted, and Sally Hope wins the Head of Form election by one vote. Meanwhile, Mr. Parker learns about Darrell's 'word blindness' and promises to look into it. The girls celebrate Sally's win, and Ellen expresses her desire to learn to swim, finding new friends and a sense of belonging.
