Summary
Socio-Cultural Life of the Bodos: Tradition, Change, and Future
Highlights
Historically, the Bodos possessed a well-structured social system with distinct customs and traditions, despite a lack of authentic written documents. Their culture emphasized values such as respect for elders and women, parental care, and community law (omasunai) for punishing culprits. Additionally, specific practices like not wearing footwear in the kitchen were part of their tradition.
Presently, these traditional customs are undergoing significant transformations, with some becoming obsolete. Modern education, religious reformation, and conversion are identified as key factors influencing these cultural shifts, leading to changes in previously held social values and practices like the prohibition of illicit sexual relations.
This study aims to illuminate the factors responsible for the changing Bodo culture for future generations. It seeks to help people understand the advantages and limitations of cultural change, appreciate traditional culture, and consider whether further cultural evolution is necessary. Ultimately, it encourages the Bodo people to take proactive steps in protecting their unique cultural heritage.
