English Comics to Enhance Reading Comprehension Among Primary Learners
Highlights
This study employed an explanatory sequential design, utilizing classroom action research for the quantitative phase with pre-and post-test assessments, and semi-structured interviews for the qualitative phase. The participants were 20 Grade 5 students at Palabayan Elementary School in Tinoc, Ifugao, Philippines.
The quantitative analysis revealed a significant improvement in the students' reading comprehension performance after incorporating English comics.
Qualitative data identified four key themes: comics design, the impact on reading comprehension, encountered challenges, and suggestions for improvement. Students highlighted the positive influence of visually appealing design and good picture-text alignment, which improved comprehension and reading enjoyment. Challenges included visual/textual overload and limited vocabulary.
Students suggested improving clarity, adding more pictures, and enhancing comic designs. The study concludes that English comics are effective reading materials and intervention tools for boosting reading comprehension in young learners.
