This video lesson for Quarter 3 Grade 9 Science focuses on volcanic eruptions, covering how to differentiate between active and inactive volcanoes and explaining the eruption process. It starts with a review of previous topics, including definitions of volcano, crater, caldera, magma, and lava.
The Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, leading to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, with over 100 volcanoes in the country. Volcanoes are classified based on their eruption records: active and inactive. An active volcano has erupted within the last 10,000 years and can be erupting or dormant (temporarily inactive but expected to erupt again). The Philippines has 24 active volcanoes. Inactive volcanoes (also called extinct or sleeping) have not erupted for more than 10,000 years but can still become active, as seen with Mount Pinatubo in 1991.
Magma forms from the melting of the Earth's mantle and crust due to extreme heat. Volcanoes form when magma rises through tectonic plate movements (moving away or towards each other) or over hot spots, which are fixed hot areas inside the Earth where rocks melt to generate magma. The eruption process begins when magma, heated continuously, rises and develops gas bubbles. These bubbles expand, causing pressure to build within the volcano. When the pressure overcomes the surrounding rock, fracturing occurs, leading to further gas bubble formation and the ejection of magma as lava.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issues alert levels for volcanoes: Level 0 (Quiet), Level 1 (Low-level unrest), Level 2 (Increasing unrest, potential eruption), Level 3 (Magmatic unrest, possible eruption), Level 4 (Hazardous eruption imminent), and Level 5 (Hazardous eruption in progress). Precautionary measures before an eruption include listening to radio updates, preparing emergency supply kits, dust masks, goggles, cleaning supplies, knowing evacuation areas, and having an emergency plan.
During an eruption, individuals should stay calm, cover their nose and mouth, close all windows and doors, place damp towels at openings, listen to news updates, keep pets indoors, pull over if driving during ashfall, seek shelter if outside, and thoroughly wash food to avoid contamination. Volcanic eruptions, while destructive, also bring benefits such as enriching soil fertility with various minerals and chemicals, forming new land for farming, and creating famous tourist spots.
