Summary
Highlights
An offshore oil drilling rig, Trans Ocean Alpha, experiences strange readings from the bottom. The crew is ordered to continue drilling despite safety concerns, leading to a massive explosion and the disappearance of the rig. The company, Halter Energy, blames a rogue wave and claims all workers are lost, while secretly covering up their illegal drilling into lava tubes.
Dr. Anette Vitrini, a volcanic expert, lectures her class about the theory of supervolcanoes and molten lava tubes under the Gulf of Mexico. She takes a group of students, including Brandon and Emily, on a research trip. Their samples show abnormal sulfur dioxide readings and evidence of extreme heat, hinting at unusual activity below the surface. Meanwhile, the chief engineer of Halter Energy, Ray Miller, discovers magma, confirming their drilling operation hit a lava pocket. He's pressured by corporate to cover it up, making it seem the rig sank due to damage, and fabricating the CEO's death.
Annette's ex-husband, Brad Sanderson, who had been studying her previous research, contacts her, revealing that the chemical composition of samples from the Gulf match the Alar volcano and the crude oil pumped by Halter Energy. This suggests Halter Energy is drilling into volcanic vents. The corporation, ignoring the rising oil temperature and seismic activity, pushes for increased production. A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hits Miami, followed by a 'steam tsunami' that kills over a hundred people, indicating a volcanic breach. Annette and Brad deduce it’s a supervolcano and Brad contacts the National Guard, while Annette and Brandon head to Halter Energy.
Annette and Brandon confront Ray Miller at Halter Energy, accusing him of using Annette's unpublished ground imaging scans to place drilling sites over volcanic tubes. Miller denies it, but Annette plants a listening device. Brandon is later ordered by Miller to retrieve the files and silence Annette. While attempting to get more evidence, Brandon and Annette are shot at. They escape, but Annette's lab is set on fire. Brandon, fearing for his life and influenced by Miller, betrays Annette, trying to steal her hard drive with the damning evidence. Emily intervenes, and Brandon is killed in the struggle.
Annette, Emily, and the Mayor present their findings to Colonel Anderson of the National Guard. Annette devises a plan to contain the impending volcanic eruption by locating the main lava dome, opening it, and cooling the lava with liquid nitrogen, diverting the flow into the Miami Canal. Emily is dispatched to prepare the liquid nitrogen tanks. The lava dome is found smack in the middle of downtown Miami. Ray Miller, still trying to cover up Halter Energy's actions, kidnaps Emily and demands the laptop with the proof from Annette. Annette manages to save Emily, and Miller is killed.
Annette and Emily rejoin the National Guard. Annette explains the imminent eruption and outlines a plan to vent the lava through a well 150 feet deep into the Miami Canal, using C4 to detonate and liquid nitrogen to control the flow. Colonel Anderson, after initial hesitation, agrees. The team races to the site, a secret Halter Energy facility. They set up the charges and liquid nitrogen, intending to remotely detonate. However, the signal is too weak. Brandon, recovering from his injuries, drives closer to manually detonate the charges, sacrificing himself to save Miami. The mission is a success, and Miami is saved.
