Reading Ability and Academic Achievement

Highlights

Study Purpose and Methodology

This study, conducted by researchers from De La Salle University, aimed to support the UN's sustainable development goal of equitable education by investigating the link between reading comprehension and academic success. It used a quantitative approach, specifically Pearson R correlation, involving 149 online learning students. Reading ability was assessed using Lexile scores obtained from ReadTheory.org, while academic achievement was determined by the participants' first trimester final grades in English, Science, and Math.

Key Findings

The results demonstrated a significant relationship between reading ability and academic achievement. Students with lower Lexile reading scores tended to achieve lower grades, whereas those with higher Lexile scores generally attained higher grades in English, Math, and Science. The study concludes that while other factors might contribute to academic success, reading ability is a contributing element.
