In Verona, Italy, two powerful families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are sworn enemies. Their constant brawls threaten the peace of the town, leading Prince Escalus to declare that any further unrest will result in lifelong imprisonment. Meanwhile, Romeo of the Montagues is heartbroken by unrequited love for Rosaline, while Juliet of the Capulets dreams of true love.
Romeo and his friends, Mercutio and Benvolio, decide to crash a ball hosted by the Capulets to cheer Romeo up. Disguised in masks, Romeo instantly falls in love with Juliet upon seeing her. Unbeknownst to them, they are from rival families. Tybalt, a Capulet, recognizes Romeo and is furious, but Lord Capulet prevents a fight. Romeo and Juliet share a passionate kiss, only to discover their families' animosity shortly after.
Romeo sneaks into the Capulet orchard and overhears Juliet confessing her love for him on her balcony. Moved by her words, Romeo reveals himself, and they declare their love. Juliet proposes marriage, and they arrange to be wed the next day. Friar Lawrence, despite his reservations about the haste, agrees to marry them, hoping it will end the family feud. Romeo and Juliet are secretly married that afternoon.
Tybalt, still incensed by Romeo's presence at the ball, challenges Romeo to a duel. Romeo, now related to Tybalt through marriage, refuses to fight. Mercutio steps in to defend Romeo's honor and is fatally wounded by Tybalt. Overcome with grief and rage, Romeo kills Tybalt. As punishment, Prince Escalus banishes Romeo from Verona instead of executing him, a decision that devastates Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo spends one last night with Juliet before fleeing to Mantua. Lord Capulet, to alleviate Juliet's grief over Tybalt's death (unaware of her marriage to Romeo), arranges for her to marry Count Paris. Juliet refuses, leading to a heated confrontation with her father, who threatens to disown her. Desperate, Juliet seeks help from Friar Lawrence, who devises a plan: Juliet will take a potion that simulates death for 24 hours, allowing her to avoid the marriage and reunite with Romeo in the Capulet tomb after she awakens.
Friar Lawrence sends a letter to Romeo explaining the plan, but it never reaches him. Benvolio, seeing Juliet's 'dead' body, mistakenly informs Romeo that Juliet is truly dead. Heartbroken, Romeo buys a potent poison and goes to Juliet's tomb. There, he encounters Paris, kills him in a duel, and then drinks the poison, dying beside Juliet. Moments later, Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead. Refusing to live without him, she stabs herself with Romeo's dagger. The watchmen, Friar Lawrence, and the families arrive to discover the tragic scene. The Prince, seeing the devastation, reveals Friar Lawrence's story, leading the Montagues and Capulets to reconcile over their children's deaths, ending their ancient feud.
