Highlights
Thousands of people in Southeast Asia are trafficked into secret sites and forced to scam others globally. Victims, like Aaron, are lured by attractive job offers abroad, only to find themselves trapped in compounds with armed guards, forced into modern slavery.
Aaron, a university graduate, was recruited by a tech company in Thailand. Upon arrival in Bangkok, he was driven for hours in a different direction than expected, ultimately being smuggled across the Moei River into Myanmar, to a notorious compound named KK Park. This area is controlled by former rebels, now Border Guard Forces, who are free to pursue their own business interests.
Inside KK Park, Aaron and others are trained in 'pig-butchering' scams. They are given manuals on how to build trust and exploit emotional weaknesses of their 'clients,' often for months. Victims, like Laura, are persuaded to invest in fake cryptocurrency websites, losing their life savings to the scammers who control the digital wallets.
Trafficked individuals face harsh conditions, working 17-hour days with financial targets. Failure to meet quotas results in beatings or long hours of standing. Refusal to work leads to threats of being resold or killed. Aid workers like Judah and Mechelle on the Thai border assist victims in escaping, often intercepting them during transfers between compounds.
The rise of these scam factories is linked to China's Belt and Road Initiative. Massive investments in Myanmar led to the development of new cities intended for gambling, which is illegal in mainland China. These areas, particularly in war-torn Karen State, became havens for shady businesses, including the scam compounds.
Chinese businessmen like She Zhijiang and notorious crime boss Wan Kuok Koi, known as Broken Tooth, are identified as key figures behind these developments. KK Park is situated between their casino cities. Broken Tooth, a former leader of the 14K triad, rebranded himself as a patriotic businessman after being released from jail, expanding his network globally through organizations like the Hongmen association.
Pig-butchering scams generate tens of millions of euros monthly. The money trail from scammed victims' cryptocurrency investments leads to wallets controlled by scammers, then to accounts linked to a Chinese businessman in Bangkok who served as vice president of the Thai-Asia Trade Association. This association and another Chinese cultural center named Hongmen were raided by Thai authorities for suspected links to organized crime and triads, directly connecting to Broken Tooth's network.
Judah and Mechelle are alerted that Aaron, Lucas, and other victims are being transferred and have been put in taxis. They successfully track down the taxis carrying the victims, intercepting them as they approach a hotel near the border.
The rescued victims are brought to a safe house, where they are informed of their options: repatriation as human trafficking victims or facing charges for immigration violations. Despite the uncertainty, this moment offers a brief respite and a chance to start anew for those who endured cyber slavery.
