The tenth and final commandment is not to covet. To covet means to strongly desire to take something that belongs to someone else. God wants us to be content and happy with what we already have.
God called Moses to Mount Sinai to give the Israelites rules. After freeing them from Egypt, their grumbling and sinful hearts meant they needed guidance to enter the promised land. God carved these 10 important rules into stone tablets to help them know how to live.
The first commandment is to have no other gods except Him. This was because the Israelites, while in Egypt, began to worship false gods, and God wanted to make it clear that He was the only true God.
The second commandment is not to make any idols, which were statues people treated as gods in ancient times. God commanded them to stop worshiping these false representations.
The third commandment instructs to be careful how God's name is used, emphasizing that His name deserves respect. It should only be used seriously and when talking about Him.
The fourth commandment is to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. God wanted the Israelites to dedicate one day each week to Him, reminding them that everything they possessed came from God. This is similar to going to church today.
The fifth commandment is to honor your father and mother, meaning to respect and listen to them. This action pleases God.
The sixth commandment is not to murder. Murder was prevalent in the ancient world, and God did not want it in His nation.
The seventh commandment is not to be guilty of adultery. This involves taking someone else's spouse, which God considers a form of 'stealing' that breaks up families.
The eighth commandment is not to steal. It is never right to take something that does not belong to you.
The ninth commandment is not to tell lies. God does not want people to lie to get themselves out of trouble or to cause trouble for others.
These Ten Commandments showed the Israelites God's nature and how to live as His holy nation. However, as God's people grew, so did their problems, leading to more rules and guidance from God on how to live His way.
