Amerigo prepares to return to Naples, expressing his newfound love for his foster family. He brings gifts and expresses a desire to visit them again. Upon his arrival, his mother shows little enthusiasm for his gifts and even pawns his beloved violin for food and new shoes, deeply hurting Amerigo. This fuels his desire to return to the North.

Amerigo, a young boy from Naples, is being sent away on a 'Children's Train' to Northern Italy, an initiative to help children cope with the post-WWII hardships. His mother is hesitant but ultimately agrees, motivated by the promise of a better life for her son, despite the fears spread by some that the children are being sent to communists who will harm them. Amerigo is particularly sad to leave his mother.

Amerigo arrives in the North and is adopted by a kind woman named Durna. He quickly experiences a different way of life, including new foods and the concept of 'sharing' within their communal household. He also meets his new foster brothers, Lucian, Revo, and Ner, who have unique names derived from communist ideology. Durna teaches Amerigo about the 'Wolf', a local communist hero.

Amerigo starts school, grappling with the differences between his upbringing in Naples and the northern customs. He receives a special gift for his birthday: a violin from Durna's brother, Arche, who also teaches him how to play. This ignites a passion for music in Amerigo. He also receives a letter from his mother, revealing that Capifiero has been arrested and expressing gratitude for her son's care, though she jokingly refers to him as a 'punishment from God'.

Amerigo reunites with his friends, Tomasi and Maruchia, who also came north on the Children's Train. They compare their experiences, and Amerigo starts to realize the depth of his foster family's care. Later, a misunderstanding leads to Amerigo, Lucian, and Rosanna (another child from Naples) discovering a dead animal on the train tracks, a somber reminder of life's fragility. Amerigo places a penny in the animal's eye as a Neapolitan gesture of respect for the dead.

Amerigo learns from a neighbor, Don Michelle, that his mother never received any packages from his foster family, as Malina had withheld them. Confronted with the truth, Amerigo realizes his mother's actions were driven by hardship and a different way of expressing love. The film concludes with him on a train, reflecting on the complexities of parental love and the choices made to protect children during difficult times, realizing that sometimes 'those who let you go love you more than those who keep you'.
