Alex devises a plan to go to Otis's house and search his room for a notebook matching the paper, but Brody refuses, remembering Otis's mother's grief.
Brody's mom discovers the note but Alex quickly hides it. The family then gathers for breakfast. The answering machine plays a message from a reporter from the Gainesville Gazette, stating he won't be coming that day due to a new lead. Another message follows from Pauline's dad, calling the Reverend and mentioning a visit to Janice, which provided comfort.
Mrs. Doc arrives to check on Brody's head wound. She mentions that Mrs. Rand, whose son Trey knew Otis, was a witness. Rivertown news travels fast, and it is revealed that Mrs. Rand saw Otis messing with Pauline in the Toadstool. She claimed Otis was trying to unhook Pauline's bikini, and Pauline was screaming for him to stop. Otis slipped, falling backward into the river with Pauline, who screamed 'Help' just once before they both disappeared.
