This video will demonstrate how to run an autoclave and prepare surgical tools in a doctor's office. Before autoclaving, tools must be sanitized, rinsed, and completely dried to avoid introducing moisture.
Essential supplies include clean, dry surgical tools, autoclave paper (often called CSR), and pouches. Pouches are more convenient as they allow viewing of the tools and come in various sizes, including rolls for custom sizing.
For hinged tools, ensure they are open to expose all surfaces to sterilization. For instruments like vaginal speculums, make sure all clamps and parts are loose and open. Arrange the tools in the package in the order they would be used by the practitioner.
Place an indicator strip inside the kit to confirm proper sterilization temperature. Fold the autoclave paper to create 'lips' for easy, sterile opening without touching the inside. The wrapping should be tight but allow airflow, secured with autoclave tape.
Autoclave tape is specific and contains an indicator that develops black stripes when exposed to the correct temperature. Before autoclaving, label the package with an abbreviation of its contents, the autoclaving date, and the initials of the person who prepared it.
