Ash meets Milton and Sarah, two other survivors who narrowly escaped the virus. They share their experiences, and Ash, after a period of despair, decides to find meaning in life by rebuilding society. He adopts a dog named Lucky and starts gathering resources and knowledge to sustain himself.

A year later, Ash encounters Emma, another survivor, who is skilled in hunting and camping. They decide to live together, establish a farm, and start a relationship. Emma becomes pregnant, giving them new hope and a reason to survive.

A massive rat infestation threatens their survival and food supply. They manage to secure their home, and Emma gives birth to their daughter, Heads. The family's bond strengthens, and they find renewed purpose in their new life.

Six years later, Ash discovers a young girl named Ivy in the forest and brings her to their home. They also welcome two other survivors, Jorge and Maureen, who found their written message. The family grows, and they learn to coexist and support each other.

A new group led by Charlie arrives, offering a water drilling device in exchange for resources. Ash is suspicious of Charlie's motives, but Emma persuades him to accept. A severe drought threatens their community, making the water supply crucial.

Charlie reveals his true intentions, refusing to leave and asserting dominance. After Charlie assaults Ivy, Ash and his family decide to eliminate him to protect their community. They confront and kill Charlie, facing the difficult consequences of their actions.

Twenty years after the initial outbreak, a new strain of the virus emerges, infecting the community. Despite Molly's (a former medical student) efforts, Ash's son, Joey, succumbs to the illness. Ash is devastated but finds support in his family.

Inspired by Joey's dreams of connecting with other survivors, Ash and his family build a radio. They discover a community of 77 people 160 kilometers away, offering new hope for a reunited humanity. Fifty years later, Ash passes on his leadership, witnessing a thriving community and renewed promise for the future.
