Invention of Slinky Toy | History of the Slinky | Story of Richard T. James | The Dr. Binocs Show
Summary
Highlights
In 1943, during World War II, mechanical engineer Richard James was working on designing tension springs for U.S. Navy ships when a spring fell from his desk and 'danced' on the floor, sparking an idea. He observed how his son and neighborhood children were enchanted by the spring's movement, leading him to realize its potential as a toy.
Richard dedicated himself to perfecting the spring, eventually coiling 80 feet of steel wire to create the first Slinky in 1945. His wife, Betty, initially skeptical, helped secure a $500 loan to start James Industries and came up with the name 'Slinky' after finding the word in a dictionary.
The Slinky's popularity took off after Richard sold 400 units in an hour and a half at Gimbals department store in November 1945. In 1960, Richard left the company, and Betty James took over, expanding the Slinky line to include items like Slinky trains and animals, such as the famous Slinky Dog from Toy Story.
In 2000, the Slinky was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. By the time Betty James passed away in 2008, over 250 million Slinkys had been sold, enough to wrap around the Earth 150 times, demonstrating the profound impact of a simple idea fueled by determination.
