Summary
Highlights
Charles Crossley, a lifelong resident of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, loved engines, cars, and driving. After graduating high school in 1941, he worked at the Mossdale Quarry, driving a cinder truck. He was passionate about tinkering with anything mechanical and even attended night school to learn more.
In November 1942, Charles received a draft notice, calling him away from his beloved Bloomsburg. He reluctantly left his comfortable life and passions to answer a higher calling, entering military service.
Charles underwent basic training in Miami, Florida, followed by aviation school in various locations including Texas, Utah, Florida, and New Mexico. His mechanical aptitude led him to become an assistant engineer on a B-24 bomber, which was a natural fit for his love of engines.
On June 23, 1944, Charles and his crew embarked on their fourteenth mission, targeting a German airfield in Juvincourt, France. During their return flight through Belgium, their plane was hit by unexpected flak and ultimately exploded, with no survivors. Charles made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
The video concludes by emphasizing that not everyone can be a famous hero, but we can all aspire to be like Charles Crossley: people who pursue their passions, answer the call to serve when needed, and make selfless sacrifices for the greater good, putting their dreams on hold for others.
