Highlights
Andrea Mantegna was born between 1430 and 1431 in Isola di Carturo to a modest family. He was an apprentice and adopted son of painter Francesco Squarcione in Padua from 1441 but later sought freedom from his master in 1448 due to artistic disagreements and financial disputes, which led to a legal battle.
Although his first signed work from 1448 was destroyed, Mantegna's stay in Ferrara in 1449 is documented. He gained fame for his decoration of the Ovetari chapel in the church of the Eremitani in Padua, where he worked from 1449 to 1456.
The Pala di San Zeno in Verona, a complex polyptych designed by Mantegna himself, stands as one of his masterpieces. In 1453, he solidified his ties with the influential Bellini family of Venetian painters by marrying Nicolosia Bellini, daughter of Jacopo and sister of Gentile and Giovanni.
In 1456, Ludovico II Gonzaga invited Mantegna to serve as his court painter, a position he held for the rest of his life in Mantua. Ludovico commissioned him to oversee his ancient collections.
During these years, Mantegna traveled to Tuscany, visiting Florence and Pisa, which significantly influenced his artistic development and made him more modern in his approach.
The knowledge gained from studying Tuscan pictorial cycles culminated in his masterpiece, the Camera degli Sposi, created between 1471 and 1474.
The period between 1475 and 1485 was difficult for Mantegna, marked by the death of his favorite son and financial struggles following the deaths of his protectors, Marquis Ludovico and his successor Federico.
With the ascension of Francis II, the arts flourished again at the Mantuan court, allowing Mantegna to maintain his role as a Gonzaga painter. He continued his work tirelessly, decorating Isabella d'Este's studio.
Mantegna was a solitary artist, difficult to categorize into any school. He created a repertoire of ancient medallions and a solemn, evocative world that influenced art throughout northern Italy.
Beyond painting, Mantegna was also a miniaturist, sculptor, and skilled architect.
