India's Tea Industry: Supporting Small Tea Growers

India's tea is a significant export recognized globally for its quality. However, land reform policies have hindered the development of large tea farms, and several issues have reduced output from the organized tea business. To counteract this, the Tea Board of India has introduced programs to support small tea growers.

Certified small tea planters can receive subsidized loans for various expenses, including planting, replanting, irrigation, and garden development. The Tea Board also offers subsidized loans for establishing 'Bought Leaf Factories' in areas with high concentrations of small tea gardens. Additionally, free training sessions are organized to help small tea growers improve their tea quality.

The establishment of a sub-office by the Small Tea Growers Development Directorate in the study district ensures that local small tea growers can easily access financial and technical assistance from the Tea Board. This support is expected to foster significant commercial growth for these growers in the near future, enhancing the sustainability of the small tea producer community.
