A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has hit Mindanao in the Philippines, causing strong tremors. This follows closely after a 7.8 magnitude quake in the same region days prior.

The earlier 7.8 magnitude earthquake resulted in 61 deaths, 1,403 injuries, and 40 missing persons. The current crisis is exacerbated by heavy rain, flash floods, and critical clean water shortages, with coastal uplift of up to 2 meters reported.

The back-to-back earthquakes have caused widespread panic among the population, particularly in southeastern countries which are still reeling from the twin threats of earthquake and tsunami. The infrastructure in the Philippines has largely collapsed due to these severe seismic events.

On-ground teams are continuously working to clear debris from the earlier earthquake, and the new quake further complicates these efforts. The disaster management authority of the Philippines has declared a major national disaster, and the duration of ongoing rescue operations remains uncertain.
