The story begins with Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, who spent 10 years fighting in the Trojan War and another 10 trying to return home. Meanwhile, his wife Penelope waits anxiously in Ithaca, fending off suitors who believe Odysseus is dead. She promises to choose a new husband after finishing a shroud for her father, secretly unraveling her work each night to delay the decision.
Goddess Athena, a friend of Odysseus, learns of Poseidon’s wrath against Odysseus and convinces Zeus to intervene. Zeus sends Hermes to release Odysseus from Calypso's island. Athena guides Telemachus, Odysseus's son, to seek news of his father in Pylos and Sparta. Telemachus encounters King Nestor and King Menelaus, who inform him that Odysseus is alive but imprisoned by Calypso.
Hermes arrives at Calypso's island, ordering Odysseus's release. Odysseus builds a raft, but Poseidon stirs up a storm. Athena once again saves him, helping him reach the land of the Phaeacians. There, he is welcomed by Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous. During a feast, Odysseus recounts his long journey, including his encounter with the Lotus-Eaters, his blinding of the Cyclops Polyphemus (enraging Poseidon), and his visit to Aeolus, keeper of the winds.
Moved by his stories, King Alcinous helps Odysseus return to Ithaca. Disguised as a beggar, Odysseus reunites with his son Telemachus. Penelope, tired of waiting, proposes an archery contest: whoever can string Odysseus's bow and shoot an arrow through 12 axe heads will marry her. The disguised Odysseus accomplishes the feat. He then reveals his identity and, with Telemachus, slaughters all the suitors.
Odysseus finally reunites with Penelope after 20 years. Initially, she does not recognize him, but after a test, she embraces him. He also reunites with his aging father. The story concludes with Athena intervening to establish peace between Odysseus and the vengeful families of the slain suitors, bringing an end to the epic poem.
Odysseus continues his tale, describing his time with the sorceress Circe, who advises him to consult the blind prophet Tiresias in the underworld. Tiresias warns him of a difficult path home. Odysseus also recounts sailing past the enchanting Sirens, enduring the monsters Scylla and Charybdis, and his crew's tragic mistake of eating the sacred cattle of Helios, leading to their demise, with Odysseus as the sole survivor.
