Summary
Maritime Provinces Sign MOU for Regional Electricity Integration
Highlights
Premier Susan Holt has signed a memorandum of understanding with the premiers of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to strengthen the regional electricity grid. This collaboration, involving Natural Resources Canada, aims to improve system reliability and meet increasing electricity demand across the Atlantic provinces.
The initiative will develop a Maritime Regional Resource and Transmission Roadmap to assess improved coordination in generation, transmission, and demand-side management. It will evaluate the potential for a regional balancing authority and a Maritime independent electricity system operator to ensure energy security and affordability.
Guided by fairness and cost-effectiveness, the project aims to identify necessary regulatory and governance structures. This strategy aligns with the federal National Strategy for an Electrified Canadian Economy, with the final roadmap and implementation plan scheduled for completion by spring 2027.
