Summary
Louisiana UM/UIM and UPD Coverage Guidelines
Highlights
UM/UIM limits default to matching liability limits unless a valid rejection form is signed. UPD is a purchased coverage without a selection form. Policies require signed forms after August 14, 1999; older forms may be invalid. If a valid rejection is not received within 30 days of application, UM/UIM is automatically added.
For accidents involving unknown drivers, physical contact is usually required; without it, claims require testimony from an independent, disinterested witness. UM claims for bodily injury must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Both UM and UPD claims must be reported to the insurer within 30 days.
The UPD deductible is $250. Property damage payouts are limited to the repair cost, cash value, or the state-mandated $25,000 minimum, whichever is lower. Loss of use is not covered under UPD claims.
