Before each session, discuss not just the content but also the mindset required. Ask players what characteristics they need to bring, like focus for a passing drill, to improve their mindset and set behavioral expectations for the session.
Tactics boards are an underused coaching aid. Beyond formations, use them for motivational quotes, technique details (e.g., exact foot placement for a shot), or outlining session objectives. This visual aid helps players, especially those who learn differently, to remember coaching points.
Encourage players to sit on their footballs during team talks. This maintains concentration by preventing distractions like fidgeting or playing with their ball. It keeps them ready to re-engage with the session quickly, unlike sitting on the ground which leads to loss of focus.
Vary your vocal volume to keep players engaged. Sometimes increase energy and volume, and other times, whisper. Whispering makes players listen harder to catch the 'secret' message, thereby maintaining their concentration and attention throughout the session.
