Regardless of the dining establishment or event, knowing how to properly set a table is essential. There are three main types of table settings: basic, casual, and formal.
The basic table setting is the simplest style. A fork and napkin are placed to the left of the plate, and a knife to the right. A water or wine glass may be positioned to the right of the knife.
A casual table setting includes a serving plate, a bread plate, and a water glass at the top right. A salad fork and dinner fork are on the left, while a dinner knife, soup spoon, and teaspoon are on the right. Guests use utensils starting from the outside and working inward.
The formal table setting is the most elegant, typically starting with a tablecloth and plate. A dinner fork and salad fork are on the left; a dinner knife, salad knife, soup spoon, and teaspoon are on the right. It also features a bread plate, a cup and saucer for after-dinner beverages, and water, white wine, and red wine glasses. A dessert spoon and fork are placed above the plate.
While these are traditional guidelines, establishments can deviate from these settings to create a specific aesthetic for their restaurant or event.
