Iliada i Odyseja wracają zawsze, gdy czasy są trudne | prof. Marek Węcowski

The Mystery of Homer and Epic Origins00:00:00

Professor Marek Węcowski examines the legend of Homer, noting that we know nothing of the man himself. He discusses the evolution of the Iliad and the Odyssey from oral traditions to written works and explores the theory that the name 'Homer' may refer to a school of singers rather than an individual author.

Dating the Iliad and the Odyssey00:08:15

The discussion turns to the timeline of the epics. Using linguistic analysis and historical landmarks, scholars generally place the origin of these works around 700 BCE. Węcowski emphasizes that the poems emerged in an environment where writing was already beginning to be used for poetry.

Politics and Heroes in Homeric Epics00:22:12

Węcowski analyzes the Iliad and Odyssey as political treatises. He describes how the primary heroes, Achilles and Odysseus, are profoundly flawed individuals whose ambitions often lead to the destruction of their own communities, serving as cautionary tales about leadership.

The Role of Gods and Fate00:35:42

The conversation explores the nature of the Greek gods in Homer's world. They are not moral role models but powerful, sometimes cruel beings. Węcowski explains how the poet creates a world where the divine is present but operates behind a veil, distancing direct human contact from the gods.

Historical Context and Inspiration01:01:00

Węcowski concludes by reflecting on why these epics continue to be relevant. He suggests they emerged during a period of intense historical transformation in the Greek world, serving as a mirror for society during challenging times, much like how modern readers turn to them during crises.
