The Impact of AI on Employee Performance and Wellbeing

Highlights

Employee Outcomes and Adoption Challenges

AI adoption presents a complex mix of consequences for employees. While there is evidence for potential gains in autonomy, performance, and engagement, these benefits are countered by concerns regarding job insecurity, technostress, and the need for new skill sets. Success in AI integration depends heavily on balancing technical capabilities with employee acceptance.

Research Themes and Findings

A review of eight articles reveals three primary clusters of topics regarding AI: • Performance and collaboration. • Employee wellbeing, job security, and technostress. • Organizational context and processes. The research notes conflicting findings and identifies a significant gap in knowledge concerning how organizations can effectively manage AI-related impacts on their workforce.

Employee consequences are therefore mixed. Evidence indicates potential gains in performance, autonomy and engagement, but also concerns about job insecurity, technostress and changing skill requirements (Brougham & Haar, 2018; Malik et al., 2022). These outcomes matter because successful AI adoption requires both technical capability and employee acceptance and support. This review therefore considers eight articles, each discussing different aspects of the relationships among AI, performance and wellbeing. Three clusters of topics emerged: performance and collaboration, employee wellbeing, job security and technostress, and organisational context and processes. The review concludes with a discussion of conflicting findings and a gap in research on how organisations might productively address AI-related performance and wellbeing outcomes.
