Summary of Jane Eyre

Early Life and Lowood School

Orphaned Jane Eyre endures a harsh upbringing with her cruel aunt, Mrs. Reed, before being sent to Lowood School. There, she experiences severe poverty and abuse under Mr. Brocklehurst, but finds companionship with Helen Burns. Following a deadly typhus epidemic, the school's conditions improve, and Jane spends eight years there as a student and teacher.

Life at Thornfield and the Failed Wedding

Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer, Mr. Rochester. Their wedding is interrupted by the revelation that Rochester has a wife, Bertha Mason, who is mentally ill and living in hiding at the manor. Devastated, Jane flees the estate.

Discovery and Final Reunion

After escaping, Jane is taken in by the Rivers siblings, who she discovers are her cousins. She inherits a fortune from her uncle and refuses a loveless marriage proposal from St. John Rivers. Hearing Rochester's voice calling to her, she returns to Thornfield only to find it destroyed by a fire caused by Bertha, who perished. Jane reunites with a blinded Rochester at Ferndean, and they marry, finding long-term happiness and equality.
