Replacing Plastic Rod Boxes on an Osprey 30

Brian Trumbull, owner of a 2001 Osprey 30, sought to replace deteriorating, UV-damaged plastic rod box inserts on his fishing boat. These old units were inefficient, cracked, and inadequately placed, prompting Trumbull to invest in a custom refit to enhance cockpit organization.

Since standard off-the-shelf replacements did not fit his specific cockpit cutouts, Trumbull partnered with Boat Outfitters to create custom King Starboard storage units. The redesign prioritized tackle tray storage over traditional rod racks, featuring tilt-out compartments tailored to fit varied tray depths while navigating obstacles like fuel fill hoses.

The new custom units maximize utility by incorporating specific spaces for large Plano tackle trays and open cubbies for essential items like downrigger plugs, towels, and gloves. This upgrade transitions the cockpit from a cluttered, deteriorating area into a clean, functional workspace customized for the owner’s specific salmon and tuna fishing requirements.
