The Count, now immensely wealthy, returns to society under his new identity. He begins to strategically dismantle the lives of those who wronged him, starting with buying properties and establishing his presence. He sets his sights on Paris, where his betrayers now reside.
Edmond Dantès, at the request of Napoleon, agrees to deliver a letter, unaware of its true, treasonous contents. His 'friends' Fernan and Danglars plot his downfall, leading to Edmond's arrest.
Edmond is imprisoned in the ominous Château d'If. The warden, Armand Dorle, sadistically explains the prison's purpose for those 'they're ashamed of.' After a brutal beating, Edmond is left to despair, facing a grim future.
News of Napoleon's escape from Elba gives Edmond's loved ones false hope. They meet with Villefort, who falsely accuses Edmond of murder and treason. Alone in his cell, Edmond struggles with his fate until he encounters another prisoner, Faria, who has been digging an escape tunnel for years.
Edmond meets Faria, an old priest, who has been imprisoned for 11 years. Faria, originally digging to escape, offers Edmond a priceless gift: knowledge. Edmond dedicates himself to learning from the priest, covering economics, mathematics, philosophy, science, and swordsmanship, transforming him from an uneducated sailor to a refined gentleman.
Faria helps Edmond piece together the true story behind his imprisonment, revealing the treachery of Danglars, Fernan, and Villefort. Edmond, now armed with knowledge and burning with a desire for vengeance, accepts that it was a deliberate plot. Despite Faria's pleas for mercy, Edmond vows revenge.
Faria is fatally injured during an earthquake, but not before revealing the location of the Spada family treasure. Edmond, using Faria's death as an opportunity, takes his place in the burial sack and is thrown into the sea, escaping Château d'If after 13 years.
Rescued by smugglers, Edmond endears himself to their leader, Vampa, by proving his skill and strategic thinking during a fight. He earns his freedom and the loyalty of Jacopo. Edmond then returns to Marseilles to uncover the fates of his betrayers and confirms the Spada fortune, laying the groundwork for his transformation into the wealthy and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo.
The Count's plan unfolds. Danglars is caught in a trap of his own making, exposed for theft. The Count confronts Villefort, revealing his knowledge of Villefort's past and his true identity as Edmond Dantes, triggering Villefort's arrest for conspiracy to murder.
Mercedes confronts Edmond, revealing she never forgot him and begging him to abandon his revenge. Edmond, torn, but still driven by his quest, refuses. He then faces Fernan, exposing him for his crimes before engaging in a duel. At the climax of the duel, Edmond's son, Albert, steps in to protect his 'father,' Fernan.
Mercedes reveals to Albert that Edmond is his true father. Fernan is defeated, consumed by his own pride and jealousy. Edmond, having achieved his revenge, grapples with the emptiness it leaves. Guided by Faria's words and Mercedes' love, he chooses a path of good, returning to the Château d'If a free man, ready to start anew with Mercedes and Albert.
The Count comes face to face with the now Count and Countess Mondego (Fernan and Mercedes) and Prosecutor Villefort. He subtly probes into their lives and orchestrates an encounter with Villefort to discuss a 'question of law,' subtly planting seeds of doubt and fear.
