The community faces severe problems including drought and pestilence, which have destroyed their crops. This leads to a struggle to pay rent and increased taxes imposed by the Friars. The villagers resist, expressing their distrust in Padre Conchita and his motives.

Upon his return, Consuelo visits him, expressing concern over his absence from community meetings. Pepe explains he has been busy, and in a heartbreaking turn, tells Consuelo he must distance himself from her to protect his friendship with Eduardo, admitting his heart belongs to another. Consuelo is deeply hurt but respects his decision.
