Highlights
Despite conquering much of the land, the children of Israel were oppressed by the Canaanites and General Sisera. No one dared to challenge Sisera. Deborah, a prophetess, called upon General Barak to take 10,000 men to the Kishon River, promising that God would deliver Sisera into his hands.
Barak expressed fear of Sisera's army and his iron chariots, agreeing to go only if Deborah accompanied them. Deborah agreed but warned him that the credit for the victory would not be his; a woman would defeat Sisera.
Deborah declared that the day had come for God to hand Sisera over to them. The Canaanite army was completely destroyed, except for Sisera, who fled the battlefield.
Exhausted, Sisera sought refuge in Jael's tent, the wife of Heber the Kenite, mistaking her for a random citizen. Jael offered him a place to rest and some milk, promising him safety.
Jael confirmed that a woman would finish Sisera, though she didn't explicitly state it would be her. While Sisera was asleep, Jael discreetly killed him. Because of Jael's courageous act, the land experienced peace for forty years, until the Israelites again strayed from God, leading to the beginning of the cycle of judges once more.
