Summary
Support Schemes for Small Tea Growers in India
Highlights
A one-time grant scheme aims to form Self-Help Groups (SHGs) of small tea growers, each comprising at least 30 members. Members must own tea-holding areas up to 10.12 hectares (25 acres). The XII Five Year Plan emphasizes these SHGs establishing efficient leaf collection, transport, and partnerships with quality tea processing factories.
The Tea Board of India encourages SHGs to establish their own micro, mini, or large factories. This initiative addresses transportation challenges, improves price realization, and resolves supply issues for small tea growers. Eligible applicants, including SHGs and co-operative groups, must cultivate a minimum of 200 hectares of land under their command area.
To enhance small tea growers' capabilities, field-oriented and training programs are crucial. The Tea Board of India is responsible for designing special training programs tailored to their basic needs. Local NGOs and other institutions participate in conducting district-level training. The Small Tea Growers Development Directorate organizes various workshops, study tours, and field training sessions for SHGs.
