Summary
Highlights
In Verona, two prominent families, the Montagues and Capulets, are locked in a bitter rivalry, leading to frequent street brawls. After a particularly violent confrontation, the Prince intervenes, forcing the families to cease fighting. At a grand party hosted by Lord Capulet to introduce his daughter Juliet to Count Paris, Juliet instead meets and falls in love with Romeo, only to discover he is a Montague, her family's sworn enemy.
Romeo and Juliet, deeply in love, decide to marry in secret the very next morning. Shortly after their wedding, Romeo encounters Tybalt Capulet, who challenges him for crashing the Capulet party. Romeo's friend, Mercutio, steps in to fight Tybalt and is fatally wounded. Enraged by Mercutio's death, Romeo retaliates by killing Tybalt, leading to his banishment from Verona by the Prince, with a death sentence if he returns.
Heartbroken, Romeo bids Juliet farewell before fleeing to Mantua. Meanwhile, Juliet's father arranges her marriage to Paris. Desperate, Juliet seeks help from Friar Laurence, who gives her a potion that will induce a death-like sleep for 42 hours, allowing her to escape the marriage. The Friar sends a message to Romeo explaining the plan, intended to reunite the lovers in Mantua. However, the message never reaches Romeo.
Romeo's servant mistakenly informs him that Juliet is dead. Believing the news, a distraught Romeo buys poison and hurries back to Verona, breaking into the Capulet tomb. There, he drinks the poison and dies beside Juliet. When Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead, she takes his dagger and stabs herself. Friar Laurence explains the tragic events to the Prince and the warring families, who, moved by the immense loss, finally agree to end their long-standing feud and make peace.
