The self encompasses our entire being, distinguishing us from others. It includes our thoughts, behaviors, values, beliefs, knowledge, abilities, heritage, achievements, and dreams.
The self can be described through self-concept, which is our awareness and perception of our unique characteristics, behavior, and abilities ('who am I?'), and self-knowledge, which is our insight into how others react to us and our understanding of our mental states ('what am I like?').
The self has two broad categories: the actual self, representing who we are now based on our thoughts, feelings, looks, actions, and social roles, and the ideal self, which is who we aspire to be in the future, influenced by our experiences, upbringing, societal norms, and personal aspirations.
There's a continuous negotiation between our actual and ideal selves. Our goal is to align them, and incongruence or discrepancy between our present actions and our ideal self can lead to stress. Personal effectiveness involves using all personal resources to achieve goals.
Personal resources include innate characteristics (genetics, appearance, physical capacities), developed resources (talents, skills, knowledge, experience), energy (replenished through rest, sleep, nutrition, motivation), and time (which we all have equally, and how we use it determines effectiveness).
Skills are categorized into hard skills (job-related knowledge and academic abilities like degrees, computer literacy, languages) and soft skills (personal qualities for interpersonal relationships and thriving in work environments, such as determination, self-confidence, stress management, creativity, and communication).
Everyone possesses strengths and weaknesses. Knowing them provides a better understanding of ourselves, helping us leverage strengths to succeed and identify weaknesses to find solutions and overcome limitations. Building on strengths and addressing weaknesses is crucial for self-development and personal growth.
As Aristotle wisely stated, 'Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.' This video, based on the Department of Education's content standards, concludes the discussion on the subject of self.
