Malpelo's father, Mastro Misciu, is a docile and exploited worker. He accepts the dangerous task of demolishing a pillar for extra money. Malpelo tries to warn his father about the danger, but one evening, the pillar collapses, burying Mastro Misciu. Malpelo fails to save him, fulfilling the grim prophecy from his colleagues.
After his father's death, Malpelo befriends a disabled boy named Ranocchio, who later dies of tuberculosis. Alone, Malpelo undertakes to explore an abandoned gallery and never returns. To this day, the quarry workers speak of him in hushed tones, fearing his ghostly appearance.
