On December 14, 2004, a bank in Barangay Dalandanan, Valenzuela City, was targeted by a notorious bank robbery gang. The robbers, who had meticulously surveilled the area, moved swiftly, taking bank employees and clients hostage and clearing the bank in less than ten minutes. The bank's location along MacArthur Highway provided multiple escape routes, which the criminals intended to exploit.
Jing Hernandez, a Valenzuela City local government staff member, happened to be passing by and noticed unusual activity outside the bank. Initially mistaking it for a film shoot, she soon realized it was a robbery when she saw men with long firearms boarding two vans. Despite the danger, Jing courageously decided to follow the vans, calling Captain Beltran to provide real-time updates on their location, enabling the police to quickly respond.
The pursuit escalated into a chaotic shootout in Paso de Blas. The robbers, firing aggressively, caused multiple casualties: tricycle driver Baltazar Degula and businessman Neri Tan were killed by stray bullets. Two police officers were also hit, with PO2 Sabala fatally shot and PO2 Mariano sustaining injuries. Police Chief Inspector Roderick Juan's team intercepted the syndicate at an exit point, leading to a direct confrontation. Inspector Juan himself was shot but narrowly survived, thanks to the quick actions of Police Officer 3 Armando Linget, who returned fire, killing the robber team leader.
The remaining suspects abandoned their vehicles and fled into a residential area in Malinta, Valenzuela, putting more civilians at risk. Senior reporter Doland Castro, covering the incident, unknowingly approached the hiding suspects and was hit by shrapnel from a grenade thrown by the robbers, sustaining multiple wounds. The explosion allowed the syndicate to briefly escape, prompting the deployment of the S.W.A.T. team.
Police, aided by vigilant residents, eventually cornered the syndicate members. Some attempted to blend in with locals by disguising themselves, and one even tried to take a child hostage, but police acted swiftly, capturing all 13 members of the Butchoy Gang, including their alleged leader, Bunny Servilla. Although the stolen cash was not recovered, the case of robbery with homicide was strong. In 2017, after nearly thirteen years, all 13 gang members were sentenced to reclusion perpetua (life imprisonment), bringing a sense of justice and closure to the victims and their families.
