Highlights
The group arrives at their snowy campsite. Jake sets up a large canvas wall tent, known for its warmth. Luke and Rebecca find a spot for their tent, shoveling a significant amount of snow to prepare the area. They get the stove roaring in Jake's hot tent, which quickly becomes warm enough for clothes to dry overhead. Despite the warmth of the tents, their water jug unfortunately freezes solid outside.
For dinner, the group prepares spaghetti carbonara, a simple yet delicious dish with minimal ingredients, perfect for camping. Luke demonstrates how to make the sauce with Parmesan cheese, eggs, and plenty of pepper, cooking bacon first. They boil pasta to be as salty as 'Italian tears' and then combine it with the sauce and bacon. The meal is served with lightly burned garlic bread and moose steak.
After dinner, it's time for dessert. They warm baked apples under the stove and prepare homemade ice cream using sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and fresh snow. The group then gathers around a large bonfire, trying to entice the ladies out into the chilly -9 degree Fahrenheit weather. They light off a variety of fireworks, including a large ball of 4,000 firecrackers, creating a spectacular display.
As the evening winds down, the children settle in for a movie using a portable projector. Luke prepares the beds, showcasing an array of extreme cold-weather sleeping bags – including two -60 degree bags for his wife and son, and several -25 and -20 degree bags. He emphasizes the warmth of their Arctic Oven tent, which makes such extreme gear almost unnecessary in the 80-degree internal temperature.
The next morning, Luke has breakfast ready: a breakfast casserole simmering on the stove. Special fire logs were used overnight to maintain a consistent fire, allowing for a good night's sleep. The casserole, made with tater tots, reindeer and Jimmy Dean sausage, peppers, onions, cilantro, and green peppers, is a hit with everyone.
After breakfast, the boys enjoy riding snow machines. Luke then begins preparing lunch: El Salvadorian pupusas, made with corn flour, refried beans, cheese, and jalapenos. He explains the simple process of forming the pupusas and cooking them. The dish is described as being like a tamale with better texture, or an El Salvadorian grilled cheese sandwich, and is served with pickled cabbage.
With lunch complete, the group begins to clean up and pack their gear. Luke highlights the Arctic Oven tent's effectiveness and briefly explains their innovative toilet system. Before heading home, Luke and his wife take one last snowmobile ride together. The challenge is deemed a success, with Rebecca staying warm and their marriage remaining intact. The video concludes with an invitation to subscribe to the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel for more adventures.
