Summary
Rural-based Economy of the BTC Area
Highlights
A significant challenge for farmers in the BTC area is their inability to access government-provided modern technology assistance, irrigation, and machinery subsidies. Despite this, there are opportunities for increased income through the cultivation of various cash crops beyond paddy, which could foster entrepreneurial endeavors. The local topography is also conducive to cash crop plantations like tea.
The BTC area's economy is entirely rural-based, with agriculture serving as its foundation. A significant 95.17% of the population resides in rural areas, indicating the economy's strong dependence on this sector. Both main and marginal workers are deeply involved in agricultural activities and the trading of produce.
Common crops cultivated in the BTC area include various varieties of paddy, betelnut, tea (both small-scale and state estate), diverse edible oil seeds, vegetables, coconut, different fruits, and wheat. However, despite these agricultural activities, many farmers utilize their land mainly for paddy for only three to four months a year, leaving fields idle for the rest of the period.
