As the dust settles, Mark, one of the protagonists, discovers that "Zone Nine," an area affected by the UCG explosion, has been erased from new maps, indicating a cover-up. He learns that researcher Tom Baker had investigated the UCG technology's flaws, linking a supposed earthquake to an explosion. Peter, a colleague, was seemingly involved in cleaning up the site and silencing Tom, possibly through a large payout. The team races to gather evidence and reveal the truth.

Mark and Siliang retrieve Tom Baker's faxed report, which details the dangers of UCG technology in specific geological formations, particularly in Livingstonia, confirming the explosion.
