Summary
Highlights
Randy, a timid young man, endures constant bullying from his coworker Chris at a burger joint. His manager, Hardy, offers him a promotion, which Randy hesitantly considers. After Chris bullies Randy into eating a spoiled burger, Benson, another coworker, snaps. Benson brutally murders Chris, Hardy, and Jess, forcing a terrified Randy to help dispose of the bodies and then abducts him.
Benson forces Randy into his car, explaining they have seven hours before the murders are discovered. At a diner, Benson insults an elderly waitress, and then lambasts Randy for his weakness, claiming he spared Randy because he is 'special.' They visit Benson's bedridden mother, where Benson prevents her from calling for help before continuing their road trip. Benson reiterates his intention to help Randy.
Benson learns Randy is a virgin and convinces him to confront his ex-girlfriend, Lisa, who broke up with him after her cat died. At Lisa's workplace, Randy apologizes, and Lisa reveals she left him because he was emotionally closed off and never talked about his feelings or past. Benson, sensing Randy's mother's overprotective nature, encourages Randy to open up. Randy tearfully confesses that in second grade, he permanently injured his teacher, Miss Beard, with a slingshot, an incident that has haunted him and made him afraid to react to bullying.
Benson decides they must visit Miss Beard so Randy can confront his past. At the school, they learn Miss Beard is absent, but the receptionist eventually gives them her address. Before leaving, Benson recognizes and brutally assaults Mr. Shepherd, a former teacher who he seemingly holds a grudge against. Randy convinces Benson to prioritize finding Miss Beard over further violence.
They arrive at Miss Beard's house, and she warmly greets Randy, surprising him. She reassures him that she never hated him and everything happens for a reason. During their conversation, Miss Beard receives a call informing her that Mr. Shepherd died. Suspecting Benson, she notices bruises on his knuckles. Benson pulls out a gun, but Randy intervenes, and Benson, realizing Randy brought him there to help him, decides to take Miss Beard hostage instead of killing her.
As they drive, Randy asks to stop, and at a diner, he secretly calls 911 using Miss Beard's phone. The waitress, Marca, confronts Benson for his earlier insulting remarks. As police sirens approach, Benson frantically blames Miss Beard and tries to shoot her, but Randy shields her and gets shot in the shoulder. Benson, shocked, apologizes, and Randy reveals he called the police. Feeling betrayed, Benson storms out, pulls his gun on the police, and is shot dead. Sometime later, Randy is seen babysitting Miss Beard's daughter, declining a call from his overprotective mother, signaling a newfound independence. The film ends with a shot of the stuffed animals Randy and Benson decorated, representing their brief, impactful journey.
