How to Prepare in Case of a Tsunami | Disasters

If you experience a tremor or notice the sea rapidly receding while at the beach or coast, immediately move to higher ground, either on foot or by car. If at home, you have only minutes to reach safety. Go rapidly inland to higher ground, staying away from rivers that flow into the ocean, and from the beach and coast. Wait at least an hour after the tsunami before returning home.

Do not touch fallen power lines. Follow safety advice broadcast on the radio by authorities. Do not go to school to pick up your children, as teachers are trained to handle disaster situations. If authorities warn of an approaching tsunami, seek shelter in a safe place.

If you must leave your home, unplug all household appliances and turn off the water and electricity. Take important documents with you and have your disaster kit and first aid kit ready. Follow instructions broadcast on the radio by authorities and do not wait until the last minute when an evacuation order is given.
