Role and Responsibilities of a Neuroscience ICU Staff Nurse

Clinical Patient Care and Monitoring

Neuroscience ICU nurses provide comprehensive care for patients with complex conditions including strokes, brain hemorrhages, tumors, and traumatic injuries. This involves assessing neurological trends, managing intracranial pressure, overseeing external ventricular drains, and monitoring ventilator and arterial line settings to detect early signs of clinical deterioration.

Treatment and Interventions

The role requires the administration of complex medications, including tPA, and the operation of advanced medical equipment. Nurses must evaluate the effectiveness of medical interventions, titrate infusions, and respond immediately to medical emergencies.

Collaboration and Support

Nurses act as a bridge within a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including neurosurgeons and therapists, ensuring accurate documentation and communication of patient status. Additionally, the role includes providing emotional support to families during end-of-life care, participating in discharge planning, and conducting patient/family education regarding illness management.
