A computer network is defined as a group or system of interconnected computers. Historically, these networks comprised desktops, servers, and printers, but modern networks now include a vast array of smart devices like mobile phones, tablets, security cameras, and smart lights, reflecting an increasingly connected world.

A common home network setup includes a switch, router, wireless access point, desktop, and phone, often with the switch and access point integrated into the router. Networks within a single area are called Local Area Networks (LANs), which connect to the outside world through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) socket. This socket links to a Wide Area Network (WAN), designed to connect separate LANs. The internet is the most prominent example of a WAN, though businesses also use private WANs to connect multiple sites.

Business networks feature office computers connected to wall or floor sockets, leading to cables running to a 'wiring closet' (also known as a patch room or server room). In these closets, devices connect to stacked switches mounted on racks. Larger networks might have multiple wiring closets connected across different floors. Another network type involves mobile phones with 3G, 4G, or 5G access, essentially a giant wireless network connected via cell towers.

Networks enable resource sharing, which would be inefficient without them (e.g., needing multiple printers for multiple computers). They facilitate sharing files and using shared printers. Servers can store files for everyone. Beyond these examples, the internet, as a massive network, offers endless possibilities including global information access, email, messaging, internet calls, hosted computing, and online content platforms like YouTube.
