Bilang ng nasawi sa magnitude 7.8 na lindol sa Mindanao, umabot na sa 65 | One Balita Pilipinas
Summary
Highlights
Heavy flooding was reported in Barangay Lumasal, Maasim, Sarangani, and Barangay Malalag, Maitum, causing traffic delays and submerging roads in up to two feet of water. This occurred six days after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, considered 'The Big One' in Mindanao.
Since the earthquake, over 5,000 aftershocks have been recorded, with 76 felt by residents. The NDRMC reported 65 fatalities, over 100 injured, and 40 missing. More than 173,000 families, or approximately 700,000 people, were affected. Over 700 infrastructures were damaged, amounting to roughly one billion pesos. The DPWH is working 24/7 to repair damaged infrastructure, reopening most national road sections in Mindanao through continuous clearing operations.
The sea receded in Glan, Sarangani, and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, after the earthquake. This phenomenon, identified as coastal uplift by PHIVOLCS, involves the rising of coastlines or land near the sea, with an estimated two-meter elevation of the shore and two-meter retreat of the coastline. This caused the death of marine life like fish, shells, and corals. Coastal uplift is also responsible for mountains with coral formations. A composite team from PHIVOLCS and local governments has been formed to investigate this event.
