Innovative Powdered Cleaner from Citrus Waste and Eggshells

Traditional liquid cleaning products often contain solvents or preservatives that dilute active ingredients, leading to increased weight, higher shipping costs, and greater expense compared to powder alternatives. These cleaners also struggle with stain-prone surfaces and issues like mold and algae.

While fruit peels are often used as fertilizer or animal feed, citrus waste, particularly orange peels, has untapped potential. Orange peels contain d-limonene, a natural oil with degreasing, disinfecting, and solvent properties already utilized in some commercial cleaners. Separately, eggshells have been shown to be effective in household cleaners, though with some limitations.

A new study proposes combining eggshell powder with dried orange peel powder to create an innovative powdered surface cleaning agent. This solution aims to reduce plastic packaging through cardboard or biodegradable materials, lower transportation costs due to its lighter weight, and decrease production costs. The powder can be diluted with water as needed by the user.

The objective is to produce this powdered cleaner using readily available, low-cost materials, making it practical for households and various infrastructures. Its simple and quick production process allows for easy recreation and widespread use, offering a cost-effective, eco-friendly cleaning alternative that also contributes to reducing organic waste.
