Summary
Highlights
The CNA introduces herself to Mr. Jones and explains the procedure for denture and mouth care, obtains consent, closes the curtain, washes hands, and gathers initial supplies, including a barrier, towel, and washcloth.
The CNA gathers more specific supplies such as a toothette, denture brush, toothpaste, emesis basin, cup of water, and two sets of gloves. The denture brush is prepared with water and toothpaste.
At the sink, a washcloth is placed over the drain, and gloves are put on. Only cold water is used for cleaning dentures. The dentures are removed from the cup, rinsed, and thoroughly brushed using the small end for grooves and the larger end for teeth, ensuring all surfaces are clean.
After brushing, the dentures are rinsed to remove all toothpaste. The denture cup is emptied, rinsed, refilled with cool, clean water, and the dentures are placed back inside with the lid. The cup is then placed on the patient's bedside table. The washcloth is disposed of in dirty linen.
The CNA prepares for mouth care by placing a towel on the patient's chest. A toothette is wetted and toothpaste is applied. New gloves are put on, and the CNA explains she will brush all areas of the patient's mouth: top, bottom, front, and back.
The CNA proceeds to brush all areas of Mr. Jones's mouth thoroughly. After brushing, the patient rinses their mouth with water, and the CNA uses a towel to ensure the mouth is dry.
The CNA cleans the emesis basin, ensuring it is dried and stored properly with the denture brush and toothpaste. Disposable items like the cup, wrapper, toothette, and barrier are discarded. Gloves are removed and thrown away.
The CNA checks on Mr. Jones's comfort, ensures his environment is clean, the bed is in a low position, and provides the call light. The curtain is opened, hands are washed, and the care plan is reviewed before informing the evaluator the skill is complete.
