Summary
Highlights
Before beginning, secure a written order for the bed shampoo, explain the procedure to the patient, assemble all necessary equipment, and provide privacy. Perform hand hygiene and apply gloves if needed, then inspect the patient's hair and scalp for any conditions requiring special treatment.
Line the pillow and mattress with a rubber sheet or waterproof pad. Position the patient supine with their head and shoulders at the top edge of the bed. Place a plastic trough or rubber sheet with a Kelly pad under their head, ensuring the trough spout extends beyond the mattress and drains into a wash basin. Place a rolled towel under the patient's neck and a bath towel over their shoulders for support, comfort, and protection.
Brush and comb the patient's hair to remove any loose dandruff, dirt, or tangles. Obtain warm water and offer the patient a face towel or washcloth to cover their eyes. Slowly pour water over the hair until it's completely wet. If matted blood is present, apply peroxide with gloves to dissolve clots, then rinse with saline before applying shampoo. Work up a lather, starting at the hairline, and massage the scalp with fingertips.
Rinse the hair thoroughly with water, ensuring it drains into the basin until all soap is gone. Apply conditioner or cream rinse if requested, then rinse again thoroughly.
Wrap the patient's head in a bath towel and dry their face with the cloth used to protect their eyes. Dry any moisture along their neck or shoulders. Use a second towel if the first becomes saturated. Comb the hair to remove tangles and dry with a dryer if desired. Apply oil preparation or a conditioning product if requested by the patient. Finally, assist the patient to a comfortable position and complete the styling of their hair.
Tidy up the area by returning all articles to their proper place, cleaning, and drying them. Record the procedure on the patient's chart for legal purposes.
