Father Burke is called by the Vatican to investigate the suicide of a nun in an abbey in Romania. He is joined by Sister Irene, a novitiate nun, as they travel to the remote location to uncover the truth behind the unsettling incident.
Upon arriving in the village, they meet Frenchie, the man who discovered the nun's body. He guides them to the abbey, which appears damaged from the war and has an eerie atmosphere. They find the nun's body has moved from its original position.
Inside the abbey, Father Burke and Sister Irene split up to investigate. Father Burke examines notes and writings, while Sister Irene tries to speak with the other nuns. She encounters strange behavior and learns about an evil presence within the abbey, a nun who 'doesn't feel holy'.
Through their separate inquiries, they discover the name of the demon tormenting the abbey: Valak, the Defiler, the Marquis of Snakes. They realize they are dealing with a powerful demonic entity that has been sealed away but is now trying to break free.
They discover that the other nuns are already dead, and Sister Victoria was the last victim. They realize they must team up with Frenchie to seal Valak back. Sister Irene uses holy water to fight the demon, condemning Valak and sealing the evil once more.
