Highlights
The movie opens with disturbing scenes of young girls undergoing brutal rituals, with a Russian woman recording. The story then introduces Piper, nearly blind, and her overprotective stepbrother, Andy. After their father's drug overdose, they are placed with a social care officer, Wendy, who finds them a foster mother, Laura. Andy, determined to care for Piper himself, insists on guardianship when he turns 18. They move into Laura's beautiful home, where they meet Oliver, another foster child with a strange mark, who is selectively mute after Cathy, Laura's daughter, drowned.
Piper gets Cathy's old room while Andy is relegated to a cramped space. Andy messages a friend about Oliver's strangeness, but Laura, observing from the shadows, scrolls through his messages and subtly manipulates him. Later, Laura watches videos of the same demonic rituals seen earlier. The next morning, Andy wakes up having wet himself (unbeknownst to him, a setup by Laura). At their father's funeral, Laura bizarrely cuts a lock of his hair and later forces Andy to kiss his dead father on the lips, creating extreme discomfort.
Oliver, displaying increasingly erratic behavior, smashes a glass door and tries to open a locked shed. Laura, after forcing Andy to participate in the uncomfortable funeral ritual, suggests an exciting night. They drink heavily, and Laura later drugs Andy's protein shake and wets his pants to make him believe he's losing control. She also deletes pictures of Oliver from his phone. Laura is seen cleaning a disheveled Oliver, assuring him he'll have to wait, while watching ritual videos. Oliver's eyes glow, and a tap bursts with hot water.
Andy wakes up with foam in his mouth and wet pants, again setup by Laura. She manipulates Piper into believing Andy is aggressive and unstable. Andy witnesses Oliver eating an insect, further fueling his suspicion. Andy tries to connect with Oliver but finds him locked in. After breaking open the door, Oliver attempts to eat a knife, causing a bloody injury. Oliver then convulses and screams when Andy pulls him past a white circle on the ground, revealing a cult-like symbol and speaking 'help me'. Laura, furious, sees this and rushes Oliver away, restarting her ritual tutorials and feeding Oliver the lock of hair from Andy's father.
Andy hallucinates his dead father, who warns him about the rain. Andy ends up in the hospital with a concussion. Laura, ignoring Andy's warning about Piper not going out in the rain, takes Piper outside to play in the rain like she did with Cathy. She then dresses Piper in Cathy's old clothes and lures her to a deep freezer, where Piper discovers Cathy's dead body. Andy returns home, unsettled. Laura watches demonic ritual tutorials, planning to use the 'consume old body, mimic death, purge soul' steps to resurrect Cathy into a new body: Piper.
Laura accuses Andy of hitting Piper, who, manipulated by Laura, confirms she smelled him. Andy sees Oliver outside, records him, but Laura destroys his phone. Andy confronts Laura, but Piper refuses to leave, brainwashed. Andy flees to the social care office and finds a missing poster of Oliver. Wendy, not realizing the danger, dismisses Andy's claims. Oliver, fully demonized, trashes the kitchen and bites Laura. Andy convinces Wendy to come to Laura's house to investigate. Laura cleans up, hides her injuries, and makes the house seem normal. Andy finds Oliver eating Cathy's corpse in the shed.
Wendy discovers Laura's injured hand and Andy's calls, realizing the truth. Laura, exposed, confesses her plan to resurrect her daughter and says Piper must be sacrificed. Wendy runs, and Andy leads her to the barn where they see the demonized Oliver. Wendy is killed, and Laura drowns an injured Andy. Laura brings Piper back to the house for the final ritual. Piper hears what she thinks is Andy but realizes it's Oliver mimicking him. Piper hides in the bathroom, finding Andy's body. Laura reveals her plan to drown Piper in the pool, mimicking Cathy's death, to transfer Cathy's soul. Piper, disoriented by her blindness, struggles to escape. Laura drags an unconscious Piper to the pool, where Oliver, now pregnant-looking, also awaits. Piper screams 'Mom,' which momentarily breaks Laura's trance, allowing Piper to escape. Oliver is momentarily humanized by a missing poster and crosses the white circle, casting out the demon. Laura, devastated, takes Cathy's corpse to the pool. Police arrive to find a healed Oliver and Laura holding her dead daughter in the pool.
