Uncle Vernon frantically tries to prevent Harry from receiving them, moving him first to Dudley's second bedroom, then boarding up the house, and finally fleeing to a remote shack on a rock in the sea.
On Harry's eleventh birthday, a giant named Rubeus Hagrid dramatically breaks into the shack. He delivers Harry's acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, explaining that Harry is a wizard and his parents were powerful witches and wizards. Hagrid reveals that Voldemort (He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) murdered Harry's parents and attempted to kill Harry as a baby, but the killing curse rebounded, destroying Voldemort's body and leaving Harry with his lightning-bolt scar. Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley, a hidden street in London where wizards shop. Harry is amazed by the magical shops and the awe and reverence with which he is treated as 'the Boy Who Lived.' They visit Gringotts, the wizarding bank run by goblins, where Harry discovers a vault full of gold left by his parents. Hagrid also retrieves a mysterious, small, grubby package from another high-security vault. Harry then purchases his school supplies, including robes, books, and an owl he names Hedwig. At Ollivanders, the wand shop, Harry tries many wands before finding his perfect match: an eleven-inch holly wand with a phoenix feather core. Harry spends his last month with the Dursleys, eagerly awaiting September 1st. He struggles to find Platform 9 and 3/4 at King's Cross Station until he sees the Weasley family. Harry manages to trick Quirrell into revealing the Stone's location in the Mirror of Erised, and Harry inadvertently obtains the Stone. Quirrell attacks Harry, but cannot touch him due to the protective magic left by Harry's mother's love. Harry grabs Quirrell's face, burning him, and Quirrell crumbles to dust as Voldemort's spirit escapes.
Harry wakes up in the hospital wing with Dumbledore by his side. Dumbledore explains that he arrived just in time to save Harry and retrieve the Stone. He clarifies that the Stone has been destroyed, and Nicholas Flamel will die, but has accepted his fate. Dumbledore answers Harry's questions, revealing that Voldemort sought to kill Harry because of a prophecy and that Harry's mother's love provided powerful protection that Voldemort could not understand.
